| Warmed by Love |
[Sep. 14th, 2009|09:15 pm] |
I just finished reading Leonard Nimoy's collection of original poetry, Warmed by Love. This is the review of the book I submitted to LivingSocial:
"I'm not going to lie: this is the single greatest anthology of poetry mankind has ever seen. The poems here speak to the core essence of what it means to be a human being. To laugh, to love, to learn, to live. Yes... television's very own Mr. Spock takes us on a journey through the depths of the human spirit and brings us out on the other side, now the wiser for having shared this journey with him. I think that maybe my favorite line is when he asks the question " I'll be your wind/will you be mine?" In those simple lines we see both the yearning for connectivity with those around us as well as the essential brotherhood of mankind that connects us all together. It's safe to say that, with only a few words, Leonard Nimoy achieved what most of the great thinkers and dreamers of our world spend a lifetime trying to capture. Oh, and it's best to read this cover to cover while wearing a replica Star Trek uniform. Obviously." Of course, I gave the book a perfect 5-star rating.
Duh.

| The Magic of October |
[Sep. 10th, 2009|09:18 pm] |
I'm gonna see Bob Dylan in Denver on the 21st of October, in the year of our lords 2009! Woohoo! I've seen him a handful of times already, but I really like the new album (all his 2000s albums, actually) so I can't wait to hear him performing his new material.
I think I might also see Marcy Playground play at the podunk bar in my county at the beginning of October! Nothing like a 90s one hit wonder to really get the energy up! The show in the middle of the week too! Woohoo!
Also in October, the ski season will be starting at Arapahoe Basin and (probably!) Loveland. I have a Colorado Pass this year, which is good at A-Basin, Keystone, Breckenridge and ten days at Vail and Beaver Creek! That should be a lot of skiing by itself but I think I'll also get a "frequent user card" for Loveland and maybe even pick up a 4-pack of tickets for Copper Mountain. I'm not too sure about Copper yet, but I think I'll be doing a lot of skiing this winter in any case.
October may shape up to be a pretty good month. Who'da thunk it? |

| Just Checking in From Time to Time... |
[Dec. 26th, 2008|11:06 am] |
Hmmm... time for an annual update. Had quite the year, working on an election campaign, pissing my money away on vehicles, and eating sandwiches.
As a reminder, my "real" blog is over at Complete Control so if you want all the latest in Flex-related news and ideas, point yourself over there.

[Aug. 26th, 2007|01:18 pm] |
Not too likely. Not on this blog anyways. But, still, thought I'd give 'er a post. Don't have a job right now but I just finished a stint with an environmental organization which was - on the whole - rewarding work. I'm living on the Cape at the moment, but may be moving either to the greater Boston area or back to Colorado soon. We shall see. As usual, my other blog (Complete Control) is updates more frequently than this, so check it out.
Oh, and go Red Sox. |

The more important bit is that I've at least tentatively begun updating Complete Control again. So... check it out. If that's your thing.
Errr... yeah. I guess that's it. Enjoy the holidays. |

I think I'm going to "officially" take a break from this blog - one of those ones with no end in sight. If I feel like revisiting it, I will. If not, well, it's here for posterity. I'll leave you with some words from Mr. Dylan:
I'm walking through streets that are dead Walking, walking with you in my head My feet are so tired, my brain is so wired And the clouds are weeping
Did I hear someone tell a lie? Did I hear someone's distant cry? I spoke like a child; you destroyed me with a smile While I was sleeping
I'm sick of love but I'm in the thick of it This kind of love I'm so sick of it
I see, I see lovers in the meadow I see, I see silhouettes in the window I watch them 'til they're gone and they leave me hanging on To a shadow
I'm sick of love; I hear the clock tick This kind of love; I'm love sick
Sometimes the silence can be like the thunder Sometimes I wanna take to the road and plunder Could you ever be true? I think of you And I wonder
I'm sick of love; I wish I'd never met you I'm sick of love; I'm trying to forget you
Just don't know what to do I'd give anything to Be with you |

In other news, I got an internship with Mark Udall (Colorado Congressman) in Washington, DC. So that's exciting. I'll ber there from mid-May to the end of June. After that I'll go back to Colorado and work for Udall out of the Western slope office (and hopefully work part time at Affordable Music).
I went to the Men's Wearhouse (har har) the other day and got a suit. I must, I looked pretty damn good in it. Hopefully I'll still think that when it's all tailored and whatnot.
Ummm... Gotta get working on my Div III proposal. Soon. Very soon. |

The Auto Club show we (myself, Miranda, and Rory) went to last night was freakin' brilliant. It is only the rare occasion where I can think of a concert I've been to that may have rivalled this show in total awesomeness.
The whole thing was great. It was at this little bar and grille in Providence, with free admission and some damned tasty eats. I got a chance to watch the last part of the Red Sox game while we had dinner and drinks at the bar and waited for the show to begin. The one bad part of the night was that the opening band (The Wrong Reasons, an awesome band), came on pretty late. But, they were good and got the crowd into a groove. Nice alt. country, I hope to see them again (and the lead singer looks like Chris from Northern Exposure).
Then... Slim and the Auto Club. FUCKING AWESOME! A wild show, and even though Munly Munly had a voice that was shot to shit, it was a pleasure to see these guys live. Now, I have all their albums (sans their out of print live album from back in the day), but I still didn't recognize a fair number of the tunes they played, and they changed the arrangements/lyrics on others, making the whole night a pleasant surprise. And these guys have ENERGY, jumping around, dancing, bouncing around... totally cool. If anyone gets a chance to see these guys... DO IT. Too weird to be popular, but they're up their as some of the best musicians I've ever seen (and I've seen some greats and should-be greats).
A good weekend and escape from Hampshire.
P.S. check out some pics of the show here. |

For sure!) are going to Amherst Brewing Company for some good east, good drinks, and good company. We meet at my mod at around 6:00, hopfully we'll be on the roa by 6:15 or so. If you want to come, just try and show up before then. Anyways, after the dinner, it'll be time to get ready for spring break. I leave for the airport with miranda early in the morning (read: around 5am), and we're spending the week in Colorado, which will be fun.
In other news, I was digging through my mp3 collection and I found an old Punaholics Anonymous recording of their signature (in my opinion, anyways) song "Money." It's freaking brilliant, very Rancid-esque. I may try and get the mp3 up on the interweb somewhere. You know, I have at least 1 or 2 decent songs from all the old cheesewheel bands now (National Blacklist, P.A., Stimulants, Squeedek), maybe I should try and get in contact with some folks and make some sort of short compilation. Or, internet-based thing. It might be fun. Steve-O, this musing is primarily directed at you, let me know what you think. I'll try and send you the song, too. |

| My Crazy & Whimsical Trip to China |
[Mar. 5th, 2006|02:28 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | refreshed | ] | Okay, due to popular demand (har har), I'm going to say a word or two about my trip to China.
It was quite fascinating. I spent the month looking primarily at China's recently industrialized area, the Pearl Delta Region. The thing that most struck me was how impossible it was to say whether the development was good or bad, although certain developments are certainly problematic. One of the biggest is that even though China's economy has liberalised, the Chinese government still has a stranglehold on information. So, there's no dialogue about the state of China's environment which is due to collapse in about 20 years, because the Chinese government won't talk about it and most people (especially students) basically believe the party line. It's troubling. The other big thing to notice is that where areas have developed, citizens have pretty wholeheartedly embraced consumerism. McDonalds is HUGE and shopping is the new most popular pasttime. This isn't meant as a condemnation, we're like that in America, it's just a pretty huge change in Chinese society. Overall, I noted a few things worth mentioning while in China:
1) Most pro-worker aid organizations were religious based. Interesting since China has had such an odd history with religion and that, as a US citizen, it's refreshing to see religious organizations act as a force for progressivism.
2) Basically everyone said that the best way to enfranchise workers to have a voice is to make it easier for people to file lawsuits. That's right, lawsuits. We bemoan "frivolous lawsuits" and the like, but in China suing is seen as one of the best ways to protect ones freedoms and rights. And you know what? It is.
3) It was dirty. And polluted. Something needs to be done about that for long term sustainability. You think we do bad things in the US? Check out China.
4) The Chinese government is still authoritarian. It's important to remember that. There is no freedom of the press. Massacres of protestors still happens, it's just not talked about anymore.
Okay, hopefully that gives a little food for thought. The trip was really amazing, and thoroughly enjoyable. |

Okay, unless you're a big baseball fan you're probably not going to care too much. But nonetheless, I'm stoked. I just picked it up for a month to begin with (so I can catch all the Spring Training games). Been a while since I updated this blog (I've been trying to update my other blog a little more regularly of late), and just wanted to send out a "boy howdy!" Just saw the new Enron "Smartest Guys in the Room" documentary the other night, and damn it was good. There is a reason it's been nominated for an Oscar this year. Really hits home the point that the Enron fiasco wasn't just one or two bad eggs, this was an example of the failure of our economic system, particularly the regulatory aspects, and that Enron was a symptom of the greater problems we find in our country. It also made an excellent connection between the problems Gray Davis was having in California and the fact that those problems were almost entirely (or, largely) manipulated by Enron and George W. Bush. Can we say "corruption" boys and girls? Dubya in cahoots with the folks at Enron to bring down a potential Democtratic presidential candidate, talk about your totally ignored huge scandal. Oh well. A good movie and it helps sort out a little better what happened in Enron and how complex the whole situation really was/is.
In other news, Superbowl tomorrow (today). We're having a party in our mod, so feel free to stop by. I'm rooting for Seattle 'cuz they're the underdogs and they deserve some love after many a rough season. Kind of like how the Patriots did a few years back. Not that I'm too invested in the outcome of the game, mostly it'll just be good sports and good eats. Rock on.
Also, I'm very happy to be back with the g/f after not seeing her for a month and a half. I could say corny and sappy crap about it, but I don't want to subject anyone to that. It's not my style.
Also also, I like my classes this semester. I think they'll be good. It's nice to take a class at Amherst again, totally different atmosphere than Hampshire, Smith, or Mt. Holyoke. Refreshing, perhaps?
Also also also, I'm working on some good new books for pleasure reading. "The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason" by Sam Harris and "Cash: The Autobiography" by Johnny Cash. If either are worth mentioning after I'm done with them, I'll be sure to say what I think.

| | sleepy | ] | I saw Saw (har har) tonight. Decent film, I suppose. Reminded a lot of Seven - but a little less clever. It's entertaining enough, if you thought that Seven could do without the big budget and stars (althoug Saw DOES have Danny Glover in it) and didn't need to be quite so clever, Saw would be a fine film. I mean, I enjoyed it, it just didn't overly impress me. Oh well, to each his own, I suppose.
Time for reading & sleep (that's where I'm a viking!). |

How about that Colts/Chargers game? Finally, the Colts lose a game. Now they just need to lose the rest of the games this season so when they face the Pats they'll be demoralized and miserable. Oh yeah. |
